Frequently Asked QuestionsHow did this project get started ?Our mission is to create a community-built playground for the children of Slidell and surrounding areas. Construction of the 20,000 square foot playground will be accomplished with volunteers from the community using the old-fashioned "barn raising" method over a period of six days scheduled for April 9 - 14, 2002. The playground will be funded by the community through individual donations, playground component sales, and engraved brick sales in addition to donations from civic groups, foundations, businesses and corporations. The architectural firm of Leathers and Associates of Ithaca, New York, who has built over eighteen hundred community-built playgrounds worldwide, will supervise construction. The playground is designed to stimulate children's imagination, creativity, physical development and education. Included are unique features designed to accommodate and enhance experiences for physically challenged youngsters, including ramping areas, Braille signage and special surfaces to permit wheelchair accessibility throughout. The playground will appeal to children of all ages. The playground will educate children in the rich history and heritage of Slidell area. Themes for the different areas are shipbuilding and fishing, space program, brickyard and lumber industry. Some of the components included in the playground will be a space shuttle, an oil derrick spitting water into the sky, a ship and a tree house. The project provides a unique opportunity for all sectors of the community to come together for a common purpose and will be a demonstration and source of community pride. It will be an example of how children and adults can work together to make something positive happen that will benefit our community for years to come. The estimated cost of the playground is $300,000. Included in this estimate are funds for architectural fees, building materials and components, equipment purchase and rentals.
